Georgina Starr | The Nine Collections of the Seventh Museum | 1994 |
Interactive CD-ROM, touchscreen computer , 214 C-prints, color photograph, Offset lithograph on paper (180cm x 125cm), video (The Making of Junior [+ Entertaining Junior] 20 mins) 1994
In 1994 Georgina Starr was commissioned to make a new artwork for the city of Den Haag. Having spent two weeks feeling lonely and depressed in a small hotel in the city she eventually turned her room into an elaborate museum: 'The Nine Collections'. Inspired by the kunstkamer paintings of Flemish Baroque painter Willem Van Haecht (Apelles Painting Campaspe) she had seen at the Mauritshuis, Starr began recording everything she had made, found and collected during her stay, making complex personal, historical and fictional links between the 'pieces' to form the nine destinct catagories. The 'Collection' includes The Costume Collection, The 7 Sorrows Collection, The Lahey Collection, The Portrait Collection, The Recollection Collection and The Junior Collection which relates to her alter ego 'Junior' a doll she made in the hotel room. Starr transferred images of the 214 pieces onto the computer to create the final work—an Interactive Touchscreen CD Rom. The CD Rom allows the viewer to tour the collection via image, text, video and sound. The work is accompanied by a detailed room photograph and plan and 20 page exhibition guide book*
Individual 'pieces' from The Nine Collections of the 7th Museum (C-Print photographs together with a silkscreen print/plan of the Collection + museum guide book) are held in major collections world-wide including: MoMA, New York, Tate Britain, London, Fotomuseum Winterthur, Switzerland, The Arts Council Collection, UK and many private collections.
The Nine Collections of the 7th Museum installation artwork (CD Rom, along with C-Prints and 'Junior' video) is held in the Walker Art Collection Minneapolis, USA.
