Georgina Starr | Drivin' On | Single screen video installation | 1996

While working on the fantasy comic-book Starvision, Georgina Starr began to bring her illustrations to life in a series of short video works that include So Long Babe and Straddling the Plains Between Past & Future. For Drivin' On Starr constructs a life-size wooden motor car and takes a trip around the East End of London. The seemingly glamorous tour in the shiny red sports car is soon revealed to be a physically challenging task—the car being made from wood. It is a heavy and cumbersome sculptural object that has to be powered and controlled by the artist's body and feet.
